Hockey Notebook: Look who cleaned up this weekend (7 photos)

The Batchewana Attack picked up a pair of Canadian International Hockey League victories over the weekend against the Sudbury Royals. On Saturday night, the Attack beat the Royals 5-2 before capping off the weekend on Sunday with a 7-0 win.

Nate Harris, Darian Pilon, Johan Kling, Drake Pilon and Jacob Palmerio scored for the Attack in Saturday’s win.

On Sunday, Shane Lippincott picked up the shutout while Grant Syrette had a pair of goals in the win. Chris Zajac, Nate Harris, Darian Pilon, Jesse Delavalle and Tyler Baker also scored for the Attack.

MIDGET THUNDERBIRDS SWEEP MARQUETTE

The Soo Thunderbirds midget team swept three games against the Marquette Electricians at the NMU Showcase over the weekend.

The Thunderbirds opened the weekend with an 11-0 win thanks to two goals and three assists from Brad Thrower. Jason Bednarski and Brendan Gillis had two goals and an assist each in the win.

In the second game, Thrower scored three times and set up two more goals as the Thunderbirds beat the Electricians 10-3. Bednarski scored twice and set up another goal in the win.

On Sunday, the Thunderbirds capped off the sweep with a 12-2 win. Lucas Miller scored three times and set up another goal in the win while Matt MacKay had two goals and an assist.

The Thunderbirds parent team, the Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League’s Soo Thunderbirds had just one game over the weekend, dropping a 3-2 decision to the Cochrane Crunch.

HIGH SCHOOL HOCKEY CONTINUES

The high school hockey season continues on Monday with a pair of games as CASS faces St. Mary’s at the McMeeken while Superior Heights meets St. Basil at the John Rhodes Community Centre. Both games are 3:30 p.m. starts.

The schedule saw three games during the past week.

On Thursday night St. Mary’s blanked Korah 6-0. Bradley Caruso picked up the shutout while six different players scored in the win for St. Mary’s. Andrew Dale, Dallas Jollineau, Connor Boudreau, Erik Paradis, Mike Fabbro and Jake Lewis scored in the win.

On Wednesday night, Korah beat White Pines 5-1 thanks to a hat trick from Chris Moskal, who also had two assists in the win. Shane Charron chipped in with a goal and an assist for Korah while Zach Duchesne also scored in the win.

On Monday night, St. Basil exploded offensively with nine goals in a 9-4 win over Superior Heights. Dom Gervasi scored three times for St. Basil in the win while Trent Sepkowski had two goals and an assist in the win. Mark Spadoni also had a pair of goals in the win. Matt Keenan and Mike Trunzo also scored for St. Basil. Colton Read set up four goals in the win. Chris Sabourin, Jackson Coneybeare, Justin Garton and Brady Kelly scored for Superior Heights in the loss.

EAGLES SWEPT ON ROAD

The Soo Eagles dropped a pair of North American Hockey League games over the weekend against the Janesville Jets.

On Friday night Nils Rygaard scored a pair of goals as the Jets opened the weekend with a 6-3 win. Mitch Fossier set up three goals while Adam Winborg added a goal and an assist for the Jets. Jeff Alderfer, Cullen Munson and Zach Solow also scored for the Jets in the win.

Mitch Vanderburg scored a pair of goals for the Eagles in the loss while Will Gauthier also scored in the loss. Keegan Miller had two assists in the loss.

On Saturday night, Fossier had a goal and two assists to lead the Jets to a 4-1 win over the Eagles. Winborg, Evan Feno and Grant Hutton also scored in the win while goaltender Matt Jurusik stopped 30 shots.

Nicolas Carbone had the lone goal for the Eagles in the loss.

The Eagles are on the road to take on the Michigan Warriors on Wednesday night before returning home on the weekend to host a pair of games, also against the Warriors, beginning on Friday night.

LAKERS SWEPT BY TOP TEAM

The Lake Superior State Lakers played a pair of non-conference road games over the weekend against the top-ranked North Dakota Fighting Sioux.

On Friday night, Michael Parks had a goal and two assists to lead North Dakota to a 7-4 win over the Lakers in the weekend opener. Tucker Poolman had a pair of goals in the win while Brendan O’Donnell and Mark MacMillan had a goal and an assist in the win. Trevor Olson and Connor Gaarder also scored in the win.

Mitchell Nardi, Kyle Chatham, Eric Drapluk and Gus Correale scored for Lake State in the loss.

On Saturday night, Jordan Schmalz had a goal and an assist to lead North Dakota to a 3-1 win and the sweep. O’Donnell and Luke Johnson also scored in the win.

Stephen Perfetto had the lone Lakers goal in the loss.

The Lakers are on the road again next weekend when they travel to Big Rapids, Mich. to take on Ferris State.
