Hockey Notebook: Lakers sweep on road to improve to 4-0

The Lake Superior State Lakers improved to 4-0 with a weekend sweep. The Soo Greyhounds AAA bantam and midget teams as well as the Soo Thunder also saw action on the road on the weekend.

After a sweep on home-ice against former league rival Michigan State, the Lake Superior State Lakers hockey team began conference action on the road over the weekend and returned with a pair of wins.

The Lakers swept the University of Alabama-Huntsville Chargers in Western Collegiate Hockey Association action on Friday and Saturday nights.

The Lakers capped the weekend with a 5-2 win on Saturday night.

Anthony Nellis scored a pair of goals for the Lakers while Luke Morgan, J.T. Henke and Josh Nenadal assisted on a pair of goals each. Diego Cuglietta, Mitch Hults and Bryan Basilico also scored for the Lakers. Goaltender Gordon Defiel stopped 18 shots.

Alabama goaltender Jordan Uhelski stopped 28 shots. Mac McHugh had both goals for the Chargers.

On Friday night, Cuglietta had two goals and an assist as the Lakers opened the weekend with a 6-3 victory. Brayden Gelsinger scored a pair of goals. Gage Torrel had a goal and an assist while Hults and Collin Saccoman added two assists each. Defiel stopped 28 shots.

Josh Kestner had a goal and an assist for the Chargers. Jordan Larson and Brandon Salerno also scored. Goaltender Matt Larose stopped 19 shots in two periods of work before Uhelski came in and stopped six shots in the final 20 minutes.

The Lakers return to action on Friday night in the first game of a weekend set on home-ice against Alaska. Puck drop is set for 7:37 p.m. at Taffy Abel Arena.

In Northern Ontario Bantam Hockey League action, the Soo Thunder AAA major bantam team dropped a pair of games on the road in North Bay over the weekend.

The Thunder fell by scores of 2-1 on Saturday night before dropping an 8-1 decision on Sunday.

The Thunder sit with a 4-6 record through 10 games ahead of a pair of games at home on Oct. 29 and 30 against the Nickel City Sons. Both games are set for the John Rhodes Community Centre.

The Soo Greyhounds AAA minor bantam team participated in the Motown Bauer Tournament in Detroit on the weekend, returning home with a tie in four games.

The team opened the tournament with a 2-2 tie against Ohio. Stephen Pszeniczny had both goals for the Greyhounds in the tie.

The team dropped a 5-3 decision to Colorado in game two. Pszeniczny, Ethan Esposito and Graham Watson scored for the Greyhounds.

In game three, the Greyhounds dropped a 3-0 decision to Chatham before ending the weekend with a 2-0 loss to Omaha.

The Soo Greyhounds AAA midget team split a pair of games in Sudbury over the weekend.

The Greyhounds beat the Sudbury Wolves minor midget team on Saturday night by a 12-2 score before dropping a 3-1 decision to the Sudbury Nickel Capital Wolves on Sunday afternoon.

The Greyhounds are back in action on Oct. 28 in New Liskeard against the Cubs. It’s the first of a three-game road trip that also sees stops in Timmins on Oct. 29 and Kapuskasing on Oct. 30.
