High school notes: Dunn, St. Basil, SMC sweep (UPDATED)

The Sir James Dunn Eagles, St. Basil Saints and St. Mary's Knights all won both games of their respective High School Girls Basketball League doubleheaders on Tuesday.

At St. Basil, Rachel Cobean scored a game high 24 points to lead the undefeated Saints past the Korah Colts 76-39. Heidi Jaaskelainen and Alicia Lepine added 10 points each for the Saints, which improve to 8-0. Liza Turpin replied with 16 points for the Colts while Lauren Podolski added 10.

In the junior contest, St. Basil edged Korah 34-28. Abby DiDonato led the Saints while 10 points while Jaclyn Cummings paced the Colts with eight.

At St. Mary's, the senior Knights squeaked out a 35-33 win over the White Pines Wolverines as Andrea Palombi and Jessica Sicoly led the winners with 10 points each. Kelly Meinke scored 12 and Holly Maskell 10 for the Wolverines.

In junior, St. Mary's whipped White Pines 54-6. Kathleen Thorburn scored 20 points and Jen Thibeault 10 for the Knights.

At Sir James Dunn, the Eagles rolled past the Braves 46-26. Ashling McWilliam and Christina Whitmell scored 14 points each for the Eagles while Stephanie Thayer with eight and Kristen Timusk with five replied for the Braves.

In the junior game, the Eagles nipped the Braves 34-33. Alexis Ambeault with 10 points and Stephanie Davies with eight led the Eagles. LaToya Busque scored 13 and Sarah Crispell eight for the Braves.

The Mount St. Joseph College Royals enjoyed a bye on Tuesday.

*** CROSS COUNTRY:

The Northern Ontario Secondary Schools Association (NOSSA) Cross Country Championships will be held on Friday at Kinsmen Park beginning at 10:30 a.m.

Joining the contingent from the Sault through Sudbury and North Bay will be members from Central Algoma Secondary School, who recently competed in the North Shore Cross Country Championships on the Manitoulin Island.

CASS' Corey Marques finished first the junior boys 6 km event. Joel Bouchard finished second and Ryan McLeod third in the senior boys 7 km race. The senior boys Huskies won the team title.

Thomas Ross finished second in the midget boys 5 km while Caitlyn Nelson was the top girls performer, finishing sixth in the junior girls 4 km.

*** FOOTBALL:

The St. Mary's Knights and Sir James Dunn Eagles hook-up on Friday night for the High School Football League Senior Division City Championship.

The unbeaten Knights, which have compiled a 6-0 overall record this season, meet the 5-2 Eagles at 7:30 p.m. at Rocky DiPietro Field.
