Greyhounds select local netminder in U18 draft

A little more subdued than its priority selection counterpart held over the weekend, the Ontario Hockey League held its annual U18 draft on Wednesday evening.

In its third year, the annual draft sees the Ontario Hockey League’s 20 member teams select players who are not on an OHL team protected list and was carded with a AAA Midget team in Ontario.

Teams hold two picks in the draft and are granted a third if they choose a goaltender with one of those two picks.

On Wednesday, the Soo Greyhounds made a trio of picks as part of the process.

Among the three players selected was local goaltender Noah Zeppa.

The Soo Thunderbirds major midget netminder was selected in the second round of the draft by the Greyhounds.

Zeppa was named the Great North Midget League’s most valuable player this season and spent time as a backup with the Greyhounds when the team ran into some injury trouble in goal.

In round one, the Greyhounds selected Alexandre Frechette from the Nevan Grads.

The 16-year-old scored 29 goals and 56 points in 44 games with the Grads this season.

In the third round, the Greyhounds selected centre Alexander Timchenko of the Mississauga Rebels.
