The Soo Greyhounds did what they needed to do on Friday night at the Steelback Centre.

Dustin Jeffrey and Brandon Biggers each scored twice to pace the Hounds to a 5-2 win over the Plymouth Whalers in front of 4,657 fans.

The win keeps the Greyhounds in control of their bid to capture the Ontario Hockey League's west division crown over the Windsor Spitfires.

Windsor kept pace by scoring a dramatic 4-3 overtime win in Saginaw on Friday. Taylor Hall scored the tying goal with 0.8 seconds remaining in regulation time before netting the winner in overtime. Both goals came on the power play.

Each team now has 92 points with one game remaining although the Greyhounds do have the tiebreaking advantage over the Spits.

The Hounds conclude the regular season on Saturday against the Saginaw Spirit at the Steelback Centre at 7:30 p.m. while Windsor hosts the Kitchener Rangers on Sunday afternoon.

Wayne Simmonds also scored for the Greyhounds, who led 2-1 after one period and 4-1 after two. Jeffrey and Simmonds also set up two goals each while Biggers assisted on another.

Joe McCann and Brett Bellmore scored for Plymouth.

The Greyhounds put the game out of reach early in the second period by taking advantage of a major penalty and a game misconduct to Plymouth's Kaine Geldart for boarding Michael Quesnele.

Jeffrey and Simmonds each scored on the ensuing power play to make the score 4-1 3:17 into the frame.

Kyle Gajewski stopped 28 of 30 shots in goal for the Hounds while Matt Hackett saw 30 Greyhound shots for Plymouth.

In other games with western conference playoff implications, London blanked Erie 7-0, Guelph hammered Owen Sound 7-2 and Kitchener doubled up Sarnia 4-2.

With the results, the London Knights have secured fourth spot in the conference behind Kitchener, the Greyhounds and Windsor. Guelph sits in fifth place with 77 points followed by Sarnia (74), Plymouth (73) and Saginaw (73). Sarnia and Guelph have one game remaining while Plymouth and Saginaw have two left.
