Just 24 hours after a disappointing loss on home ice to the Owen Sound Attack, the Soo Greyhounds rebounded on Saturday night.

The Greyhounds beat the Sudbury Wolves 3-2 on Saturday night in Ontario Hockey League action.

The win came on the heels of a 2-1 loss to Owen Sound Friday in which Greyhounds Coach Drew Bannister said the team was lucky to come away with a point.

“I really liked how we bounced back (from Friday’s loss),” said Bannister.

“We played well in spurts,” Bannister said. “We had some real quality scoring chances where their goalie made some good saves. Both goalies were good but ours played just a little bit better.”

Joseph Raaymakers made 30 saves for the Greyhounds.

“Ray was excellent again,” Bannister said. “He made some real good stops under pressure.

Gage Guertler scored twice for the Greyhounds while linemate Blake Speers assisted on two goals.

“This is a game we certainly needed them in,” Bannister said of the Greyhounds top line, which includes Zach Senyshyn. “It’s nice to see them get rewarded.”

“They challenged themselves to be better (after Friday’s game),” Bannister said. “Zach Senyshyn was really good. He had a ton of chances. He was continuously working away from the puck.”

Bannister credited the penalty kill late in the game as well.

“We managed to stay compact and not really give them anything inside,” Bannister said of the penalty kill late in the game. “We were able to collapse and clear pucks, not all the way down but just out of harms way so we could recover back.”

Mikkel Aagaard got the Wolves on the board in the late stages of the second period, scoring on a shorthanded breakaway with 17 seconds left in the middle frame.

Ryan Valentini had a power play goal late in the third period to round out the Sudbury scoring.

Wolves goaltender Zack Bowman made 35 saves.

“Sudbury played a pretty good hockey game tonight and made it difficult for us,” Bannister said.

The win snaps a two-game losing skid for the Greyhounds, who improve to 25-21-6-1.

The Greyhounds continue to battle for sixth in the OHL’s Western Conference with the Owen Sound Attack.

The two teams sit tied for sixth in the standings as both teams picked up wins on Saturday. Owen Sound beat Flint 5-4.

Sudbury falls to 15-34-3-1 with the loss.

The loss ended a four-game winning streak for the Wolves.

The Greyhounds return to action on Feb 18 in Windsor against the Spitfires.
