Greyhounds fall to Whalers

A third period goal broke a 1-1 tie and lifted the Plymouth Whalers to a win over the Soo Greyhounds on Saturday night.

James Neal's goal at 11:13 broke the tie and John Vigilante added some insurance with an empty net goal as the Whalers broke the Greyhounds two-game winning streak with 3-1 win.

The win comes two nights after the Greyhounds opened their five-game road trip with a 3-2 win over the Windsor Spitfires.

After a scoreless first period, Jeff Carter gave the Greyhounds a 1-0 lead in the second with a power play goal, his 11th of the season.

Dan Collins tied the game for the Whalers later in the period on the power play. Mike Knight recorded a pair of assists.

Kyle Gajewski made the start in goal for the Hounds and kicked aside 19 of the 21 shots he faced. Ryan Nie stopped 30 of 31 shots for the Whalers.

The win vaulted the Whalers (8-9-4-2) over the Greyhounds (9-10-3) into second place in the Ontario Hockey League's west division behind the Spitfires.

The Greyhounds are back in action on Sunday afternoon against the unbeaten London Knights at 2 p.m.

Next week, the Hounds visit Saginaw on Wednesday before travelling to Sarnia on Friday.

The club returns home next Sunday to begin a four-game home stand against the Guelph Storm at Memorial Gardens at 7 p.m.
