Spirit Start Strong with 3-1 Exhibition Victory

(Saginaw, MI) The Saginaw Spirit took to the ice at the Saginaw Bay Ice Arena for the first of five exhibition games, defeating the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds 3-1. The game saw approximately 347 people in attendance.

Spirit forward Tom Craig put the Spirit on the scoreboard with a goal at 8:48 in the 2nd period. Chris Chappell and Jack Combs assisted on the goal. Shortly thereafter at 9:05 the Greyhounds tied the game 1-1 with a goal from Jacob Muzzin. Forward Jack Combs took back the lead for the Spirit at 15:35 in the 2nd, off of an assist from rookie T.J. Brodie.

The game remained 2-1 until the final minutes of the game when the Greyhounds pulled goalie Matt Hache. Spirit forward Ryan McDonough took advantage of the empty net, scoring at 18:49 in the 3rd period. Zack Torquato had an assist on the goal.

Spirit goalie and Ottawa Senators draft pick Ryan Daniels had 23 saves in the effort.

The Spirit head to Sault Ste. Marie, ON tomorrow for a re-match with the Greyhounds, then come home to take part in the two day Mexican Hockey Tournament next weekend at the Dow Event Center.
