After taking points in seven straight games, the Soo Greyhounds were left with nothing on Friday night.

A first period goal by the Kitchener Rangers stood up as the winner in a 1-0 win over the Hounds in front of 4,461 fans at the Steelback Centre.

It wasn't a poor effort by the Greyhounds but the locals were caught flat footed in the first period and could not solve Rangers goaltender John Murray as they showed more jump in the second and third periods.

Kyle Gajewski made the start in goal for the Greyhounds and kept the homeside in the game through the first 20 minutes with several big saves including several from close range on second and third chances.

The Rangers did manage to get on the board at the 15:10 mark as Nazem Kadri banged a rebound past Gajewski just as a Greyhound penalty expired for a 1-0 lead.

Kadri's goal stood up as the winner as the Hounds either hit a goal post or were turned aside by Murray the rest of the way.

Andrew Desjardins, who had a strong game for the Hounds, had two glorious opportunities alone in front of the goal but hit a post and was turned aside by Murray.

In the second period, rookie Chris MacKinnon, who also had a strong game, was in alone and robbed by Murray while Cody Thornton was turned aside seconds later on a blast from the slot.

While on the power play late in the third period, the Greyhounds nearly scored again but a tipped point shot, that snuck behind Murray, rang off the post.

Murray, who stopped all 23 shots he faced, was named first star while Gajewski, who also faced 23 shots, took second star honours and Kadri third.

The Greyhounds are back in action on Sunday at the Steelback Centre with a tough match up against the London Knights at 7 p.m.
