Terry Jones has been nominated a RBC Local Hockey Leader for his years of faithful volunteer service with the Goulais River rink.

"Terry Jones, of Goulais River, has shown true hockey leadership in his community," said Shelley Lepp Fransen of RBC Local Hockey Leaders.

"It is people like Terry who continue to make hockey a Canadian tradition," she said.

Fransen explained that RBC Local Hockey Leaders program seeks "to highlight the true behind-the-scenes hockey leaders that put their time and effort into making hockey fun and accessible for Canadian kids."

Nominations for recognition as a local hockey hero close on January 31, 2007.

As stated in an earlier RBC news release, "Regional winners, one from each of the 13 Hockey Canada geographical branches, will receive $10,000 towards a registered charity/hockey cause in their community, special recognition in the Hockey Hall of Fame and a signed Team Canada jersey."

Jones was nominated by Robbie Warren, whose nomination essay is reprinted below:

Nomination essay

When the snow starts to fall, Terry Jones does not sleep.

Mr. Jones is up all day and all night, alone, making sure he can provide all the residents of Goulais River, young or young at heart, a smooth sheet of ice to figure skate, curl, or play hockey on.

Battling blizzard like storms, Mr. Jones is outside, flooding our roof-covered, outdoor rink.

All the residents of Goulais River take pride in Mr. Jones's work every time that skate blade cuts into the fresh sheet of ice.

Also, we do not have the benefit of a zamboni at our community rink, so again, Mr. Jones is up at the crack of dawn to make sure our ice is cleared and new again.

The residents of Goulais River applaude and thank Terry Jones for his hard work, and we feel he is absolutely deserving of being recognized as an RBC Local Hockey Leader.

Terry Jones is the Mr. Hockey of Goulais River.

When winter hits, Mr. Jones is hard at work.

He will not stop until us hockey players have ice to play on.

We have been recognized by players in our neibouring communities, (Heyden, Sault Ste. Marie) that Mr. Jones makes the nicest, smoothest ice around.

Mr. Jones puts is heart and soul into his work, and it shows and pays off gratefully.
