Three area Jr. A hockey teams stand to benefit from the Carmen Provenzano Memorial Cup Golf Tournament, to be held on Sat. July 29 at Maplewood Golf Course. Based on the number of golfers who register for the tournament in support of either the Soo Indians, Soo Thunderbirds or Blind River Beavers, the respective Northern Ontario Jr. Hockey League teams will reap a percentage of the proceeds. The tournament will be a four-person-per-team, best ball event. Entry fee is $100 per player ($400 per team) which includes 18 holes of golf, a lasagna and chicken dinner, adult refreshments and ticket on the door prize. The tournament is open to men's, women's and mixed teams. From the Soo Indians' end, any Indians' alumni who signs up for the Provenzano Memorial Cup Golf Tournament will receive free season tickets to '06-07 games of the NOJHL Indians, formerly the Northern Michigan Black Bears. Indians' alumni includes several players from this side of the St. Mary's River including Jim Capy, Terry Casola, Sam Colizza Jr., Gary Chicarelli, Kevin Chicquen, John Cucullo, Richie Donahue, Jamie Fortin, Ken Gaetano, Dave Kasch, Terry Kirkpatrick, Dave Lillie, Pat Lillie, Jim McMillan, Lee Rodgers Jr. and Frank Tomchak. To register for the July 29 golf tournament, call Randy Russon at 759-1599. On ice, the Provenzano Cup began play last fall in honour of the former Sault MP. Last season's regular-season series for the Provenzano Cup was between the Thunderbirds and Blind River. The '06-07 Provenzano Cup regular-season series will be between the Thunderbirds and Indians.
