The 2019 Northern Football Conference season came to an end for the Sault Steelers on Saturday night.
In the opening round of the NFC playoffs, the Steelers dropped a 61-0 decision to the Steel City Patriots Saturday night at Cardinal Newman High School in Stoney Creek, Ont.
The loss ends a season that saw the Steelers post a 4-4 record in the regular season, the second NFC season for the Steelers after a year hiatus.
Other NFC playoff action on Saturday night saw the Sarnia Imperials advance with a 36-12 win at home over the Oakville Longhorns and the Ottawa Sooners beat the Sudbury Spartans 41-0 in Sudbury.
Saturday’s other NFC playoff game between the GTA All Stars and Tri-City Outlaws was a 9 p.m. start and results were not available at the time of writing.
In Ontario Football Conference action this weekend, the Sault Sabercats junior varsity team is set to take on the Chatham Cougars on Sunday afternoon in playoff action.
The Sabercats are coming off a 49-26 win over the Forest City Thunderbirds last weekend locally in the opening round of the playoffs.
Michael Nicoletta ran for 283 yards and five touchdowns in the win while quarterback Ryan Barnes threw for 352 yards and a touchdown along with 65 yards rushing on nine carries and also had a rushing touchdown for the Sabercats against Forest City.
Chatham advanced thanks to a 34-27 win over the Brantford Bisons last weekend.
The winner of Sunday’s contest between the Sabercats and Cougars will advance to the OFC final next weekend against the Scarborough Thunder.
The Thunder, who finished the regular season with a perfect 8-0 record, advanced on Saturday with a 20-8 win over the Peterborough Wolverines.
