Eagles pound Saints for commanding lead

The Sir James Dunn Eagles are now within a win of a high school hockey city championship after whipping the St. Basil Saints 8-1 on Thursday night at Memorial Gardens.

The win, which followed a 2-0 win in game one, gives the Eagles a 2-0 lead in the best-of-five city championship series.

The Eagles' Matt Irving proved to be unstoppable as the sniper connected five times and added an assist to pace the Eagles attack. David McFadden, Brad Hernden and Ari Vitala also scored for the winners.

Eagles goaltender John Ellis has his bid for back-to-back shutouts spoiled with 2:10 remaining when the Saints' Nathan Richichi scored.

Game three is scheduled for Saturday at 7:30 p.m. at the John Rhodes Community Centre.
