Eagles grab early lead in city final

The Sir James Dunn Eagles moved one step closer to a high school hockey city championship with a 2-0 victory over the St. Basil Saints on Wednesday night.

The victory at the John Rhodes Community Centre gives the Eagles a 1-0 lead in the best-of-five city championship series.

John Ellis stood tall in the Eagles net to record the shutout as his team provided the netminder with a lead and some insurance in the first period.

Matt Irving opened the scoring 3:38 into the first period with a goal that would prove to be the game winner. Deryl Mills add the insurance marker with 3:02 remaining in the opening frame.

Dave McFadden assisted on both goals.

Game two goes Thursday at Memorial Gardens beginning at 7:30 p.m.
