OHL Announces Performers of the Month for October

The Ontario Hockey League today announced the OHL Performers of the Month for October, 2007.

OHL Player of the Month - Dustin Jeffrey, Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds

Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds' centre scored 10 goals and 12 assists for 22 points in 11 games last month, helping the Greyhounds to a 7-3-0-1 record. Jeffrey recorded at least one point in all but two games last month, including a six point effort (one goal, five assists) in a 6-2 win over the Ottawa 67's on October 7. He also had a hat trick and one assist in a 6-2 win over the Kingston Frontenacs on October 21. Jeffrey was named OHL player of the week for the first week of October.

The 19-year-old native of Courtright, Ontario was an eighth round pick of the Pittsburgh Penguins in the NHL Entry Draft last June after posting a career best 34 goals and 92 points in 68 games with the Greyhounds. A first round pick of the Mississauga IceDogs in 2004, Jeffrey was named to represent the OHL in the ADT Canada-Russia Challenge later this month.

OHL Rookie of the Month - Patrick Maroon, London Knights

Patrick Maroon of the London Knights was the top scoring rookie in October with 10 goals and 10 assists for 20 points in 11 games. The 19-year-old left winger from St. Louis, MO, enjoyed six multiple-point games last month, including a three goal, two assist performance in an 8-2 win over the Ottawa 67's on October 14. He followed that with three straight two-goal games and racked up 17 points in a seven game point scoring streak.

Maroon was a sixth round pick of the Philadelphia Flyers last June and signed a contract with the NHL club last week. He was an 11th round pick of the Knights in 2004 and committed to play with the club this past summer.

OHL Defenceman of the Month - Yannick Weber, Kitchener Rangers

Yannick Weber of the Kitchener Rangers was the OHL's top scoring blueliner during the month of October with seven goals and 12 assists for 19 points in 11 games. The 19-year-old sophomore from Bern, Switzerland recorded at least one point in all but two games last month, including three-point games against the Erie Otters on October 5 and 24th and against the London Knights on October 28. He totaled six goals and 14 points during a seven game streak that ended on October 28.

Weber, a third round pick of the Montreal Canadiens in the NHL Entry Draft in June, was the OHL and CHL player of the week for the last week in October.

OHL Goaltender of the Month - Steve Mason, London Knights

Steve Mason of the London Knights earned the goaltender of the month award after posting a 7-1-0-0 record along with a 2.00 goals against average and .944 save percentage in eight starts last month. The 19-year-old native of Oakville, Ontario started the season in the NHL with the Columbus Blue Jackets. He won seven straight games after his return to help the Knights rally from an 0-6-0-0 start the the year. Mason turned aside at least 30 shots in all of his games last month and allowed two or fewer goals on five occaisions, including a 40-save shutout over the Oshawa Generals on October 21.

Mason, a third round pick of the Blue Jackets in 2006, was also named to represent the OHL in the ADT Canada-Russia Challenge later this month. He also won the award last November and was the OHL Goaltender of the Year last season.
