Dramatic win part of weekend sweep for Sault College hockey

The first road trip of the American Collegiate Hockey Association (ACHA) D-2 season for the Sault College men’s hockey team was a successful one over the weekend.

Sault College returned home with a pair of wins over Trine University, including a dramatic win in the opener of the weekend set on Friday night.

After Brad Thrower got Sault College on the board early with a power play goal on Friday night, Trine would take a 2-1 lead into the intermission with a pair of power play goals of their own.

Thrower proceeded to tie the game with his second of the night only to see Trine score a pair of quick goals midway through the period to take the lead. A shorthanded goal by Kaidan MacDonald last in the frame pulled Sault College to within a goal heading into the third period.

Ryan Vendramin tied the game late in the third period, only to see Trine take the lead again but Andrew Barbeau would force overtime for the Cougars, scoring with five seconds remaining in regulation time.

Vendramin scored on the power play in overtime to give Sault College the Friday night win.

Thrower finished the day with two goals and two assists for Sault College while Max Khull assisted on a pair of goals.

On Saturday, Mark Tassone scored three times while Vendramin also had a three-point night with two goals and an assist as Sault College wrapped up the weekend with a 7-2 win.

Khull had a goal and an assist for Sault College while Barbeau and Thrower assisted on a pair of goals each. Mitchell Devins-Cann also scored in the win.

Next up for Sault College is a pair of road games this weekend against Adrian College.
