'Couldn't be more proud': Sault skater competes at national event

Yvonne Barnes qualified for the Skate Canada Pre-Novice/Novice Challenge in Oakville, where she placed 35th overall

Yvonne Barnes of the Lake Superior Figure Skating Club spent last weekend in Oakville participating in the 2023-2024 Skate Canada Pre-Novice/Novice Challenge.

Barnes was representing Team Ontario, whose women’s novice group included the top 16 competitors in the province.

“Qualifying was rigorous, and skaters were required to meet the Skate Canada minimum technical score in addition to the ranking process to make the team,” said LSFSC in a news release.

The athletes were competing with top skaters from across the country, vying for one of 18 spots at the Canadian National Novice Figure Skating Championships, which will be held in Waterloo later this month.

Barnes placed 35th overall.

“Yvonne had a great experience competing against the top novice skaters from each province. I couldn't be more proud of her,” said LSFSC’s head coach Kerry Bain. “Yvonne’s hard work and determination showed in each performance.”

“After working with Yvonne for 12 years watching her compete at a national event is all a coach can ask for.”
