Cougars come up empty but set OCAA record

COUGARS WINLESS ON ROAD TRIP / OCAA RECORD SET

The Sault College Varsity teams came home empty after their road trip to London and Hamilton on the weekend.

The men's basketball team saw their chances of wrapping up a division title disappear quickly as the Fanshawe Falcons got out to an early 20-4 lead and never looked back. The Cougars could only cut the lead down to 10 in the second half and eventually fell 91-67.

Jean Louis Ouattara led the Cougars with 23 points while Andrew Turgeon added 10.

On Saturday at Mohawk College, the men were once again outplayed the entire first half and had a very poor defensive effort.

The Cougars gave up 53 first half points and trailed by 17. The second half was a gutsy effort by all 5 starters as they actually took the lead with 7 seconds remaining only to have a 3 point basket waved off by a travelling call.

The Mohawk Mountaineers made two clutch free throws to prevail 87-83. Jean Louis Ouattara again led the Cougars with 31 points while Jeff Rennison contributed 18.

The Sault College Cougars are currently tied for second place with a 9-4 record and will now host the cross town rival Algoma University Thunderbirds on Wednesday February 15th @ 9 p.m.

A win will give the Cougars an opportunity to host a qualifying game next week.

On the volleyball court, the ladies completed their season with a 3-0 loss to the Fanshawe Falcons. Game scores were 25-19, 25-14, 25-13. The Cougars finished with a 3-12 record.

The ladies were led by Nicole Beauchamp's seven points which included 5 serving aces. Nicole's 5 service aces gave her 48 for the season and broke an OCAA record for most aces in a season. Congratulations Nicole!
