Colts knock off Knights for tournament win

Korah Colts won the first annual Steelworkers Local 2251 High School Hockey Tournament by defeating the St. Mary’s Knights 3-2. Matt Lafleur opened the scoring at 13:19 to put Korah in the lead.

Korah Colts won the first annual Steelworkers Local 2251 High School Hockey Tournament by defeating the St. Mary’s Knights 3-2.

Matt Lafleur opened the scoring at 13:19 to put Korah in the lead. Andrew Trecoce scored on the power play at 9:29 to tie the game. Rob Calvert scored at 8:03 of the period at on a power play to regain the lead for Korah before St. Mary’s tied the game again with the only goal of the second period when Tyler Wilson scored. Bob Gilbreath scored the game winning goal at 13:51.

CASS won in a shootout to capture the bronze medal. The Huskies defeated Sir James Dunn 4-3. Charlie Cooke pulled his goalie and Lucas Gjos tied the game with 17 seconds left in the third period. Nothing was settled in the 5 minute overtime or after the 2nd shooter in the three man shootout. Thomas Ross scored on the third shot while Kendal Brock stopped all three Eagles shooters.

Kyle McColeman scored two goals in 38 seconds of the second period to tied game after CASS found themselves down 2-0. Scoring for Sir James Dunn were Mike Dion, Elvis Ruck and J.J. Bergamin.

The response by the public to the tournament was great. The calibre of hockey was excellent, the facilities were excellent, all the teams want to come back and the Steelworkers Local 2251 want to sponsor, so there will be a Second Annual Tournament.

Semi Finals

Korah scored with 40 seconds left in the third period to send the game into a five minute overtime period. After the overtime, Jeff McAllister scored the only goal in the shootout to send Korah to the final. Scoring for Korah were Jacob Vachon, Daniel Ferris and Luke Critchley. CASS scorers were Lucas Gjos, Nick King and Thomas Ross.

St. Mary’s dominated Sir James Dunn in a penalty filled game and defeated the Eagles 4-0 to advance to the final. Scoring for the Knights were Jeff Greco, Tyler Wilson, Mitch Currier and John Johnson.

Korah advanced to the finals as the Wild Card team with a .700 goals percentage. Confederation was .695 and Widdifield was .666.

The Steelworkers Local 2251 Invitational tournament convened by Central Algoma Secondary School hopes to expand to sixteen teams on the same weekend in 2008.
