College curling championship starts Thursday at Soo Curlers

The curling hotbed of Sault Ste. Marie once again is set to play host to another prestigious curling championships as the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association begin their provincial championship this Thursday at the Soo Curlers Association.

Twenty-Two teams representing ten schools will vie for championships in Men’s, Women’s and Mixed divisions; with medal rounds to happen Sunday, February 16. 

The Host Sault College teams are excited about their opportunity to play on home ice at the Soo Curlers Association. 

The Cougars have secured medals in the past few championships with Men claiming Bronze in 2013 & Gold in 2012, Women Gold in 2012 and Mixed with Silver in 2013. 

In the men’s division Fanshawe College looks to defend gold in a field that is deep and should bring some exciting curling for the week. 

The women’s division will crown a new champion this year as 2013 Champion Niagara College is only fielding a mixed squad.  Finally, in mixed Fanshawe looks like the team to beat after capturing gold in 2013 over the Sault.

All the curling starts Thursday morning will the first draw scheduled for 8 am – Opening ceremonies goes Thursday at 11 am – with action continuing all weekend with medal round play set for Sunday morning and Gold Medal games at noon. 

All draws are held at Soo Curlers and live end by end action can be found on the Cougars website at www.saultcollege.ca/services/athletics.

Top teams from this week’s provincials will qualify for the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association National Championship hosted by Sault College March 19-22 at the Soo Curlers Club.
