Cody Thornton received quite an honour on Friday as Soo Greyhounds head coach Craig Hartsburg announced that the overage forward will serve as the team's captain this season.

Considered a true leader both on and off the ice, Thornton is entering his fifth Ontario Hockey League season and second with the Greyhounds after being acquired from the Belleville Bulls in the summer of 2005.

"He's a kid that on the ice plays hard, plays for the team and off the ice, he cares about every player whether you're a 19 year-old or a 16 year-old. He'll hang around with you and talk to you just the same," said Hartsburg. "He cares about you and tries to help you and I think that is very important at this level.

"I've seen him already spending a lot of time with (2006 first round pick James) Livingston and (2006 second round pick Sean) Jones and those guys. We couldn't ask for a better kid."

Greyhound hopefuls hit the ice for the first time on Friday and will continue with morning practises and a 5 p.m. scrimmage on Saturday at the John Rhodes Community Centre.
