City high school track meet in the books

As high school sports continue into the spring, the city high school track meet is complete after two years away due to COVID-19.

A number of athletes from across the city’s high schools converged on Jo Forman Track earlier this week with Northern Ontario Secondary School Athletics (NOSSA) berths on the line.

In the novice events, which includes grade 9 students, Abigail Jaremko of St. Mary’s picked up a pair of golds in individual events, winning the 400m dash with a time of 1:10.35 and the 300m hurdles with a time of 53.94 seconds.

Jaremko was also a member of the St. Mary’s team that won the 4x100m relay with teammates Julia Heika, Kloe Kurylo, and Bryce Gagnon. The team won the event with a time of 56.39 seconds, just under a full second faster than the Korah team of Miila Gordon, Katie MacFarlane, Madelyn McNally and Matea Bruni.

In the novice 100m dash, Gagnon edged out Bruni for top spot with a time of 13.85 seconds, with Bruni finishing in a time of 13.86 seconds.

In the women’s junior events, which include grade 10 students, Isabelle Fata of St. Mary’s took top spot in both the 100m and 200m races while Tori Carbone, also of St. Mary’s was victorious in the 400m and 800m events.

Korah’s Matea Glavota picked up a first place finish in the 80m hurdles and placed second in the 300m hurdles, an event won by teammate Delaney Elliott.

Elizabeth Gavey of St. Mary’s placed first in the long jump as well as the triple jump and was a member of the Knights 4x100 relay team that placed first. The team also included Fata, Shannon Solomon, and Payton Magli.

The senior events, which include students in grades 11 and 12, saw Kassie Sartor of St. Mary’s pick up gold in the 100m and 200m races while Lucy Lafrance of Korah took top spot in the 800m and 1,500m events.

In the novice men’s events, Nathan Guizzetti of Korah had a big day with three golds.

Guizzetti took top spot in the 100m, 200m, and was a member of Korah’s 4x100 relay team that finished first. The other members of the relay team included Coulson Bell, Nathan Higham, and Hunter Dickinson.

Callum McCauley of St. Mary’s took top spot in the junior 100m and 200m events and was a member of the Knights 4x100 relay team with Harley Wardell, Ryan Posteraro, and Daniel Guzzo that also won gold.

Korah’s Ethan Carbone finished first in the junior long jump and triple jump events.

Nicholas Talvitie, also of Korah, grabbed a pair of first place finishes as well at the senior level, winning the 100m and 200m events.

The top four finishers in each event qualify for the NOSSA meet, which will be held on May 25 and 26 in Sault Ste. Marie.
