CASS beats SJD for Local 2251 tournament

The Central Algoma Secondary School Huskies defeated Sir James Dunn 2-1 to win the second annual Steelworkers Local 2251 Tournament Cup. Cole Julien opened the scoring at 9:49 of the second period on an unassisted goal.

The Central Algoma Secondary School Huskies defeated Sir James Dunn 2-1 to win the second annual Steelworkers Local 2251 Tournament Cup. Cole Julien opened the scoring at 9:49 of the second period on an unassisted goal. Craig Hurley scored a power play goal at 14:27 of the third period to put CASS up 2-0. The goal was assisted by Brett Campbell and Cole Julien.

Matthieu Lacroix scored for Sir James Dunn on a power play with 1:49 left in regulation to pull within one goal.

Riley McPhee closed the door to preserve the victory even though SJD was on a power play for the last 2 minutes of the game. St. Mary’s defeated White Pines 5-2 to capture the Bronze medal. Tyler Wilson, John Johnson, Jordan Verdone, Andrew Trecroce and Sheldon St. Louis scored for St. Mary’s, who led 4-2 going into the third period.

The score was tied after the first period. Matt Santos and Tyler Pearse replied for St. Mary’s. In the semi-finals, CASS scored two power play goals to defeat St.Mary’s 2-1. Craig Hurley and Brett Campbell scored for the Huskies while Cody McDonald replied for the Knights. Sir James Dunn defeated While Pines 6-5 in overtime to advance to the finals. The score was 1-1 after the first period and White Pines lead 5-3 going into the third period. Ryan Walker scored a shorthanded goal with 1:36 left in the game to tie. Ryan McLean, with an unassisted goal, won the game. Other teams participating were: Korah, St. Basil, Franco Cite(Sturgeon Falls), Espanola H.S., Wasse Abin H.S. (Manitoulin) and Manitoulin S.S.
