MOSCOW, RUSSIA – Canada will face Finland in the final of the 2007 IIHF World Championship on May 13th after defeating Sweden 4-1 in semi-final action on Saturday. Finland advanced to the final with a 2-1 overtime victory over Russia in the other semi-final.

In Saturday’s semi-final game, Justin Williams (Cobourg, ON/Carolina, NHL), Jonathan Toews (Winnipeg, MB/North Dakota, WCHA) and Eric Staal (Thunder Bay, ON/Carolina, NHL) scored first-period goals for Canada as it built a 3-0 lead. Johann Davidsson got Sweden on the board at 6:13 of the second period to make it 3-1. Rick Nash (Brampton, ON/Columbus, NHL) made it 4-1 for Canada with a power-play goal at 15:17. Cam Ward (Sherwood Park, AB/Carolina, NHL) made 29 saves for the win in goal.

Canada avenged last year’s 5-4 loss to Sweden in a semi-final at the 2006 IIHF World Championship in Riga, Latvia. Canada will be looking for its first gold medal at the IIHF World Championship since 2004, when it won the second of back-to-back gold medals.
