Canada 1-0 at Junior World Cup

The Junior World Cup kicked off on Tuesday in Piestany, Slovakia and Breclav, Czech Republic and the Canadian entry is off to a good start.

Bryan Cameron of the Ontario Hockey League’s Belleville Bulls scored a pair of goals, as did highly touted NHL prospect Angelo Esposito to pace Team Canada to a 5-3 victory over Switzerland. Brett Sonne added a goal and an assist in the win while goaltender Justin Leclerc stopped 17 shots.

Yves Muller, Denis Hollenstein, and Tobias Bucher scored for the Swiss.

Sault native Zack Torquato was held off the scoresheet in the win while playing on a line with Colton Gilles and Nick Ross.

Torquato and Team Canada now face Sweden on Wednesday. With the setup of the tournament, Team Canada needs a first place finish in their group if they hope to advance to the Gold Medal game on Aug. 12. The first place teams in the tournaments two divisions play for gold while the second place teams battle for bronze. Canada won the tournament last summer.
