GLC UNDERGOING MAJOR FACILITY UPGRADES

The Algoma University College Thunderbirds basketball program is heading into the second half of the OCAA season with high expectations and a new playing surface.

On Tuesday, January 9th, the George Leach Centre will be installing a portable hardwood court just in time for this Friday night’s double-header versus Mohawk. The court was previously used at Auburn University, an NCAA Division I powerhouse.

Mark Kontulainen, Algoma’s Athletics Director, is excited about the new addition. “The GLC has quickly become the heart of the local basketball community. It is important for us to ensure our athletes are able to play on a top quality court. This will be the best basketball court in the city”, said Kontulainen.

The court will also be utilized by the Titan’s basketball club and can be moved to the Steelback Centre for any major basketball events that are brought to Sault Ste. Marie.

In addition, the GLC is enhancing its cardio and strength training options with the addition of over $40000 in new state-of-the-art equipment. Upgrades include new treadmills, recumbent bikes with built in TV feature, and a Smith Machine. The additional equipment will help address the needs of the facilities growing student and community user membership base.
