Algoma swept by St. Clair

The Algoma University College varsity basketball teams were on familiar ground on Friday night, but it was the same old story as the St. Clair Saints swept Algoma in both Men's and Women's varsity basketball.

In the Women's game, St. Clair ran up a 35-18 halftime lead and cruised to a 74-43 victory over the Algoma women.

St. Clair, who shot just over 53 per cent as a team compared to just under 44 per cent for Algoma, were led by the hot hands of April Lounsbury and Kim Pawluk. Lounsbury and Pawluk were the game's top two scorers with 20 and 18 points, respectively.

Caroline Draudt also had a strong game shooting 5-for-8 from the field and picking up 11 points in the victory.

Roberta Reid and Jessica King paced the Algoma attack with 11 points and 10 points, respectively, in the loss.

In the Men's game, Algoma fell behind by 14 at half time but managed to keep pace in the second half only being outscored by four points in the second frame, but the result was a disappointing 90-72 St. Clair victory.

Akeil John's 8-for-15 shooting performance was the key for St. Clair, as John hit for 25 points to lead all scorers in the game. Jerome Forde, on a 7-for-8 performance picked up 19 while Rohan Burrell picked up 14 for the Saints.

Algoma's offense was led by all-star Matt Chaimbrone, who picked up 23 points in the loss. Adam Carpenter scored 12 points in just over 19 minutes of action while Jarret Sanders added 11 in defeat.

Another telling stat for the Algoma men was their inability to secure rebounds as St. Clair out-rebounded Algoma 45-24 on the night.

The Algoma Women will have three games left on their regular season schedule, with all three being in the friendly confines of the George Leach Centre on the Algoma Campus.

Next Women's action will be on Feb. 5 at noon when the Mohawk Mountaineers are in town to face Algoma.

Next action for the Men will be Feb 2, which is Wednesday evening when they take on their cross-town rivals from Sault College at Sault College.

Next home action will be on Feb 4 when they face Lambton at the George Leach Centre.
