In Wednesday night OCAA men’s basketball action, the Sault College Cougars played host to their cross town rival Algoma University Thunderbirds.

The Thunderbirds came ready to play fresh off their upset of #1 ranked Sheridan College the past weekend. But a capacity crowd and a team of gritty Cougars answered the challenge to the treat of the Sault faithful.

In a hotly contested game of emotions both teams battled throughout, trading the lead numerous times in the first half. The Cougars tactical pressure defense gave Algoma fits as they clung to a 35–33 halftime lead.

The second half proved to be another fast paced, crowd pleasing, pressure packed performance of basketball prowess by both teams. The Thunderbirds used their size on the boards to build up a lead of 15 points at one point but the never quit Cougars kept pace with their community foes battling back to cut the lead to 5.

In the end, the Thunderbirds secured their victory from the foul line handing the host Cougars a tightly contested 7 point loss by a score of 82-75.

Game high scorer was import Vyron Phillips with 26 points to lead the Thunderbirds while Sault College was lead by Andel Martin and Aaron Richards with 25 and 20 points apiece.

Thus marks the end of the first half of OCAA regular season for both teams as they take a break for the Christmas Holidays, returning in January on the road at Humber and Sheridan Colleges.
