Algoma basketball teams face Waterloo

The Algoma men split while the women dropped a pair of games.

It was a busy weekend for Algoma University’s men’s and women’s basketball teams.

Both teams were on the road for weekend games as they played games at Waterloo.

On the men’s side, Algoma opened the weekend with a narrow 69-64 loss. Ian Nash paced Algoma with 21 points and five steals. Nathan Riley chipped in with 15 points and 10 rebounds.

Nedim Hodzic of Waterloo led all scorers with 22 points and 18 rebounds. Jon Ravenhorst chipped in with 12 points while Mike Pereira had 11 points and 16 rebounds.

On Saturday, Adam Benrabah had 17 points as the Algoma men beat Waterloo 77-68. Damian Okungbowa added 14 points while Reng Gum had 12 points for Algoma. Riley had nine points and 10 rebounds.

Nedim Hodzic led Waterloo with 23 points.

On the women’s side, Kristen Osborne had 14 points to lead Waterloo to a weekend opening 65-51 win on Friday night. Nicole Schlick added 12 points for Waterloo.

Mairead Dunn paced Algoma offensively on Friday with 13 points and seven rebounds.

On Saturday, Emily Wilk had 15 points as Waterloo capped the weekend sweep with a 56-45 win. Breanna Hudspeth added 11 points.

Karina Cole led Algoma with 15 points in Saturday’s game. Jamerka Martin added 10 points. Dunn had 12 rebounds for Algoma.

Both Algoma teams return to action on Jan. 20 against Windsor.
