Algoma basketball finishes season on positive note

Algoma University’s basketball teams wrapped up Ontario University Athletics regular season action over the weekend with home games at the George Leach Centre.

On Friday night, the Algoma women turned a three-point lead at the half into a 66-54 victory over Laurentian.

Karly Fracalanza led Algoma with 12 points while Jamerka Martin added 11. Karissa Kajorinne also hit double-digits with 10 points. Rebecca Wylie had nine points and 10 rebounds for Algoma.

Kayla Deschatelets led Laurentian with 15 points while L’Ashante Henry added 13 points, seven rebounds and six steals.

In Friday’s men’s game Kadre Gray had 30 points, eight rebounds and five assists as Laurentian beat Algoma 87-64. Joseph Sykes had 12 points and nine rebounds while OJ Watson also had 12 points for Laurentian.

Ian Nash led Algoma with 12 points. Jermaine Lyle added 10 points for Algoma.

The Algoma women capped off the season on a positive note with a 69-49 win over Nipissing on Saturday night.

The Algoma women were backed by a 15-point performance from Kajorinne while Karina Cole and Carriera Lamoureaux added 13 points each. Fracalanza chipped in with 10 points.

Claire Abbott led Nipissing with 16 points.

The Algoma women finished the season with a 4-16 record.

In men’s action on Saturday night, Algoma used overtime to beat Nipissing 88-87 in the regular season finale.

Sean Clendinning of Algoma led all scorers in the game with 31 points. Lyle added 19 points wile Algoma got a 14-rebound performance from Nathan Riley.

Marcus Lewis led Nipissing with 25 points and 10 rebounds. Ismael Kaba added 19 points. Jaaden Lewis had 17 points. Justin Shaver had 14 rebounds for Nipissing.

The Algoma men finished the regular season 5-15.
