Students and other members of the St. Hubert School family have entered the house building business.

SooToday.com received the following article from the Dacey Road school, and we are happy to share this "good news" story with our readers.

************************* Jaime Lake, a Grade 7 student at St. Hubert School, has good reason to smile these days.

That's because he led a successful fundraising effort that will benefit others far from Sault Ste. Marie.

The photo shows Jaime presenting a $2,000 scheque to Sister Mary Sammon of the Sisters of St. Joseph as St. Hubert Principal Gail Biocchi-Rebek and Vice Principal Domenic Rosso look on.

This story began in February when Jamie had the opportunity to travel to Guatemala to help build a house through “Oneness Through Mission,” which is a spiritually based organization led by the Sisters of St. Joseph.

The program was established in 2003 to promote, encourage, support and assist those seeking ways to serve others.

“Oneness Through Mission” partners with another organization, “From Houses to Homes,” to build houses for those in need.

Jaime’s experience in Guatemala is described by him as “very breathtaking,” enabling him to see what the world looks like from another point of view. “The experience was difficult, moving and allowed me to realize how much we really have,” says Jaime.

On the plane returning to Canada, he was thinking about how to present a report to his class detailing his trip.

It was then that he came up with a very good idea.

He decided to challenge the St. Hubert Catholic School community to “Build a House.”

His challenge was accepted and his classmates and the staff at St. Hubert set out to raise $2,000, enough to cover the cost of the construction of a home for a family in Guatemala.

On Friday, March 23rd, the students held a sing-a-thon, raising money through accepting pledges for their efforts.

Late Friday afternoon, St. Hubert Catholic School reached their goal and arranged the triumphant cheque presentation.
