SooToday.com has received the following note from Grant Grbich, teacher delegate representing Algoma District at the Canada Wide Science Fair in Ottawa.

Grbich updates on some extraordinary accomplishments by a trio of local students there:

************************* Wow, what a rush!

The Canada Wide Science Fair awards night celebrations took place last evening in Ottawa and the city of Sault Ste. Marie was well represented.

Angelo Posteraro [shown at right of photo] won a very prestigious award from the Weizmann Institute.

As a result, the Korah IB student has an opportunity to study engineering science in Israel, this July - all expenses paid - valued at over $8,000.

French immersion student Chloe Halpenny [shown, centre] won an honourable mention in her category of human sciences, along with a certificate and $100 cash.

Another Korah IB student, Mackenzie Cook [left], drew a lot of interest from judges, government officials and business VIPs for his research on air temperature effects on flight and adapting the shape of an aircraft wing in flight, yet missed out on awards.

It was somewhat made up by over 1,000 people helping to celebrate his 18th birthday - classic. The week-long event has been amazing, with events planned all day long, every day.

We've all seen and done amazing things - and all pure Canadiana, from visits to Parliament Hill, Major's Hill for the Tulip Festival, the Byward Market, Canadian War Museum, Museum of Civilization, Museum of Science, and all nearby universities and colleges, to events like dining at the Chateau Laurier, visiting an aboriginal village and eating venison, and participating in an international City Chase (a combination of Fear Factor and Amazing Race).

The word needs to get out that the Canada Wide Science Fairs are about so much more than just the science - but the science IS amazing, too.

All four of us would like to extend our thanks to Algoma Rotary for sponsoring our delegation.
