Yooper nails place on November Congressional ballot

State Representative Gary McDowell (D-Rudyard) today filed 1,726 signatures with the Michigan Secretary of State’s office to secure a place on the ballot in Michigan’s First Congressional District.

“My Yooper upbringing, and the work ethic I developed from my years of work on my family’s hay farm and decades as a United Parcel Service driver, have always guided me as I’ve worked to find common sense solutions to the problems facing residents throughout the U.P. and Northern Michigan,” said Gary McDowell after filing the necessary signatures to secure a place on November’s ballot.

“Congress needs U.P. values to turn around our economy and create jobs for the hard working men and women in the U.P. and Northern Michigan and every day I’ll stand up for them and against the special interests.”

Gary McDowell is a lifelong UP resident, and has dedicated both his professional work and public service to improving the quality of life in the Upper Peninsula and throughout Michigan.

McDowell served for over 20 years as the Treasurer for McDowell Hay, Inc., his family’s 1,000-acre hay farming and distribution company in Rudyard and worked as a United Parcel Service driver for 33 years before retiring in 2003.

McDowell is recognized for his work on improving access to education for young people, expanding economic development in the Upper Peninsula, attracting good paying jobs, and looking out for family farmers.
