************************* Ukrainian Cultural Centre to receive Municipal Heritage Committee Award
SAULT STE. MARIE, ON - The Sault Ste. Marie Municipal Heritage Committee is pleased to announce the Ukrainian Cultural Centre of Sault Ste. Marie as the recipient of the 2009 Municipal Heritage Committee Heritage Award.
The award is offered annually by the Corporation of the City of Sault Ste. Marie in recognition of contributions to the preservation, restoration and enhancement of the city’s heritage resources.
The Ukrainian Cultural Centre undertook a campaign to recognize the 1914-1920 internment of Ukrainians and other Europeans as “enemy aliens” in Sault Ste. Marie.
In 2008 the Ukrainian Cultural Centre, with the assistance of the Ukrainian Canadian Civil Liberties Association and the co-operation of City Council, erected a plaque to commemorate the internment.
The plaque is located where the Sault Ste. Marie Museum now stands, which was the site of the internee receiving station.
The Ukrainian Cultural Centre has played an important role in protecting the cultural heritage in this community.
They have enriched the culture of Sault Ste. Marie through programs that have successfully encouraged the continuation of the language, traditions, arts and culture of the Ukrainian community.
Congratulations to the Sault Ste. Marie Ukrainian Cultural Centre, recipient of the 2009 Sault Ste. Marie Municipal Heritage Committee Heritage Award!
