This is no routine morning on one hilltop street in the central part of the city.

"We started the day off with a splash," note loyal Knox Avenue readers John and Sarah in an e-mail to SooToday.com News.

"Our wake-up call was a portion of the street exploding into a small geyser."

Things began happening around 4:30 when a water main broke.

"Baseball-sized chunks of rock and road were being blasted into the air with the water," the e-mail continues. "Luckily, it doesn't look like anyone was hurt."

PUC Services told us water shooting into the air as shown is unusual for water main breaks.

Soil conditions contributed to this rare occurrence.

Usually, problems are evident with water bubbling on the surface.

About 20 households are without water as PUC crews work to remedy the situation.

It's expected that service will be restored around noon.
