Workweek Outlook: It's all up from here

Not a single day this month climbed above freezing, and the long-range forecast doesn't look promising for any sign of a January thaw

Rest assured that the current cold snap and climatology agree that temperatures can only go up from here. The 30-year climate records suggest that Jan. 26 (this Wednesday) is the coldest day of the year in Sault Ste. Marie. Furthermore, not a single day this month climbed above freezing, and the long-range forecast doesn't look promising for any sign of a January thaw.

We could see a few isolated flurries Monday morning and then skies partially clear in the afternoon as temperatures climb to -8°C. It'll be a cold night as temperatures fall well into the minus twenties by Tuesday morning.

A cold north wind arrives Tuesday and drops daytime highs to -15°C under mostly sunny skies. Even a slight breeze will bring windchill values near -20. Sunshine early Wednesday will be replaced by cloud cover in the afternoon. Temperatures will recover slightly and climb above -10°C with some late-day snow.

Thursday is the best chance of accumulating snow (it looks like 5-10 cm right now – stay tuned), and then another shot of colder than normal air returns at the end of this workweek yet again.
