************************* Groundbreaking planned for new medical building

SAULT STE. MARIE, MI – Officials from War Memorial Hospital (WMH) and Moyle Construction will perform a ceremonial groundbreaking to signal the start of construction of the new medical office building on Wednesday, August 5, at 10 a.m.

The ceremony will take place on the future site of the four-story building, which will be located on the eastern side of Osborn Boulevard across from the hospital.

It will be located to the immediate north of the city parking ramp and will be connected to both the parking ramp and the hospital by an elevated walkway.

Joining the WMH board of trustees and Moyle officials at the ceremony will be representatives of the City of Sault Ste. Marie, Chippewa County, and a variety of other local dignitaries.

Tom Moyle, CEO of Moyle, Inc., said work on the building’s foundation will begin almost immediately following the groundbreaking. “We use a special foundation system because of the soft soils, so as soon as we can get the equipment to the site, that work will begin.”

Project construction is anticipated to last from nine months to one year.

Upon completion, one half of the 40,000-square-foot facility will be leased by War Memorial Hospital and the remainder will be occupied by independent physician offices, according to Moyle.

As part of the project, the Houghton-based construction company will be responsible for erecting the walkway to connect the building to the parking ramp.

For its part, WMH is in the process of designing an outpatient surgical suite that will occupy the building’s first floor.

The hospital will also provide the overhead walkway that will allow patients and visitors to cross Osborn Boulevard to the main hospital without dealing with weather or traffic.

With preparations underway to begin the project, Tom Helminen, president of Moyle Construction, said the company would be seeking local labor. “We are encouraging local participation in the project. Subcontractor bid packages will be released in the near future.”
