The Steamy Bean has opened a second location downtown.

It's located at 71 Spring Street, where the Quiznos Sub shop used to be.

It opened on Tuesday.

Proprietor Patricia Vecchio said she's wanted to open a downtown location since she opened the Steamy Bean on Great Northern Road eight years ago.

But she didn't want it just anywhere downtown.

"I really wanted it to be this block," Vecchio said. "Between the lottery corp, the TD Tower, the Queen's Centre - this is where the bulk of the walk-in traffic is. So it had to be the right spot."

So far things have been busy, with line-ups in the early mornings as people pick up their wraps, sandwiches, salads, coffees and desserts, often before 10 a.m.

Vecchio (seen on the right with a brand new staffer at the new location) said she may look at expanding her lunch menu if things keep going as they have been.

But it's a bit soon to really tell.

Vecchio had wanted a drive-through but feels it isn't really going to be necessary or any enhancement to the business.

"It feels very social, very community-oriented," she tells SooToday.com. "With all the walk-ins I don't think a drive-through would work well."

Vecchio is getting to know her customers, where they work, what they like and when they visit, so she's not yet ready to make any decisions about what the evening business is going to be like.

The Great Northern Steamy Bean features Musician's Night on Sundays and Mondays as well as other periodic events and fundraisers but Vecchio isn't sure how things will go at the new location.

So far it hasn't seen a lot of evening traffic but it's pretty soon to tell, she said.

"Things may change as the weather warms up and more people are out walking around," she said. "I think it's going to be a little more event-oriented down here so I'll have to just wait and see what I'm going to do."

The WiFi is free and the chairs are comfy so Vecchio said she expects that, once word gets out about the place, more people will be bringing their laptops to hang out, work and drink coffee.

She said she believes people will find it a convenient place to hold small, informal business meetings and after-work get-togethers.
