****************************** A stunning sunrise shot of Lake Superior and a true story of tragedy and heroism involving local commercial fishermen earned Lake Superior Magazine two bronze awards at a recent international conference in Branson, Missouri.

The International Regional Magazine Association (IRMA) awarded the honors for single photography to an image by Duluth photographer Jay Steinke that was on the cover and was given as a free poster in the magazine’s 30th anniversary issue August/September 2009, and for general feature to the October/November 2009 story The Old Man and the Inland Sea by Marlin Bree about a fatal fall storm that took the life of one Minnesota North Shore fisherman and inspired heroic efforts of another who tried to save him.

IRMA, celebrating its 50th anniversary this year, has more than 40 members, including prestigious regional publications like Arizona Highways, Adirondack Life, Down East, Texas Parks & Wildlife and Oklahoma Today in the United States, and Cottage Life and British Columbia Magazine in Canada.

Their circulations range from about 10,000 bimonthly to more than 200,000 each month.

“Because we so admire the other publication members of IRMA, we are always proud to receive honors at the annual IRMA conference,” said Konnie LeMay, editor of Lake Superior Magazine.

The annual IRMA conference rotates among members.

This year it was the end of September near Branson, hosted by Missouri Life.

Lake Superior Magazine, among the smallest members, hosted the event in 2006 in Duluth.

Next year’s conference will be in Reno, hosted by Nevada Magazine.

Lake Superior Magazine is published by Lake Superior Port Cities Inc., a family-owned company located at 310 E. Superior St., Duluth, Minnesota.

Its website is found at www.lakesuperior.com
