NEWS RELEASE

ALGOMA DISTRICT SCHOOL BOARD

************************* Another ADSB school wins prestigious title of "School on the Move"

Students, staff and parents at Greenwood Public School couldn’t be prouder!

The Literacy and Numeracy Secretariat has announced that Greenwood Public School is one of 42 schools in the province being recognized in Phase II as a “School on the Move.”

The designation, bestowed by the province’s Literacy and Numeracy Secretariat, is given to schools who have demonstrated substantial improvement in student achievement, particularly in the areas of reading and writing.

Brent Vallee, principal of Greenwood Public School, presented a plaque from the Literacy and Numeracy Secretariat to students during a school assembly today.

Vallee commented that “this award recognizes the hard work and effort put forth by our entire school community. What an incentive for us to continue our efforts to improve student learning by working hand-in-hand with other schools!”

Greenwood joins another Algoma District School Board (ADSB) school, Parkland Public School, in this designation.

Parkland was designated a "School on the Move" in Phase 1 (2006-2007) of the project and has opened its doors to other ADSB schools to share effective practices that make a difference to student learning.

Lucia Reece, superintendent of education, noted that, “We are very proud of everyone’s efforts over the last three years. Greenwood P.S. has demonstrated that student success comes with a focus on effective literacy instruction combined with the development and promotion of good character. They are to be commended for raising the bar and closing the gap on student achievement, and we are looking forward to sharing their best practices with other schools across our district.”

School personnel and ADSB administration attended a gala in Toronto on June 4 and 5, where schools from both Phase I and Phase II networked, shared best practices and began to develop plans for the 2007-2008 school year.
