CSCNO students shine at the 'Quand ça nous chante'  music festival

(March 5, 2012) - Conseil scolaire catholique du Nouvel-Ontario (CSCNO) secondary school student musicians had the experience of a lifetime at the ninth annual “Quand ça nous chante” music festival.

Nearly 400 up-and-coming musicians from 34 Ontario francophone secondary schools took part in this gathering which took place from February 23 to 26 at École secondaire catholique Thériault in Timmins.

La Volée du Nord [see gallery photo], a band whose members attend ÉSC Jeunesse-Nord in Blind River, earned the Franco-Ontarian pride award (Coup de Coeur “fierté franco-ontarienne”).

This prize is awarded to the artist or group that demonstrates outstanding pride and commitment in showcasing an original repertoire or existing songs from Franco-Ontarian artists.

La Volée du Nord, led by teachers Michel Levac and Kevin Dunlop, invested a great deal of energy into rehearsing their performance, and it paid off.

The sweet performance by Sault Ste. Marie’s ÉS Notre-Dame-des-Grands-Lacs Grade 9 student Choraline Burton also deserves mention.

She took home one of four solo artist awards (Coup de cœur du meilleur artiste solo).

This prize recognizes outstanding individual performances that display professionalism and originality.

As part of this award, Choraline will travel to Granby (Québec) in September to take part in the « Jamais trop tôt » (young artist) project during the Festival international de la chanson de Granby.

This student will benefit from a 10-day training program and will share her talent on stage of the Palace de Granby during this international music festival.

“Our students had the opportunity to present a 25-minute show at the friendly music festival to other students, whose passion for music is equally strong. The band also received professional feedback regarding their performance, and took part in two workshops led by professional artists,” explained Mr. Michel Levac, ÉSC Jeunesse-Nord teacher. “By being exposed to various styles of francophone music and through their contacts with other musicians from across the province, the students were able to see and hear for themselves that the French-language music industry is alive and well in Ontario and that a musical career in French is a real possibility.”

The Quand ça nous chante festival is an educational activity offered by the Association des professionnels de la chanson et de la musique (APCM).

The Conseil scolaire catholique du Nouvel-Ontario offers a French Catholic Educational Program that is widely recognized for its excellence.

The CSCNO provides a quality academic program that runs from early childhood to adult education, with more than 7,200 students in 27 elementary and 10 secondary schools.
