Shelters/second stage housing providers to improve services

Toronto - The McGuinty government is investing $17,339 to help Women in Crisis Algoma Inc. keep its facility safe and secure for women and children who need their help, David Orazietti, MPP announced today.

"We made an early commitment as a government to do more to support community agencies that assist women and children," said Orazietti.

"Today's announcement is another example of how we are following through on our commitment to strengthen shelters and second stage housing which play a vital role in our domestic violence prevention system."

Across Ontario, 98 women's shelters and second stage housing providers will receive a total of $2 million to make security upgrades, accessibility improvements, health and safety renovations and undertake efficiency and cost-saving projects.

Projects can include energy saving initiatives, enhancing security systems, installing wheelchair ramps or small structural improvements.

The investment is part of the provincial government's $66 million Domestic Violence Action Plan announced last December.

The Action Plan will strengthen existing domestic violence programs and services, and places an important new emphasis on prevention and better community supports for abused women and their children.
