NEWS RELEASE
WOMEN IN CRISIS
*************************
Sault Ste. Marie, are you ready for this year’s annual Walk A Mile In Her Shoes awareness event? Join us on Saturday, May 25 2019 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at City Hall!

The Walk will begin from the steps of City Hall and follow St. Mary’s River to the library and back again! The event will open with a welcome from the mayor’s office, our Stiletto Sponsor, Francine Floreani from Great Lakes Honda and new this year we plan to laugh our way through a quick heel toe, heel toe lesson with Tim Murphy from ONNTV! Come early you don’t want to miss that!

Because of community organizations and individuals like you...

Our first walk was met with resounding success with more than 180 individuals coming together to put on 3” red high heels (and other fun footwear!) and walking in demonstration of their support, speaking out on the issue of Violence Against Women and Children and saying #WeSEE #WeHEAR #WeKNOW and it’s for you that #WeWALK.

This year our campaign is #EVERYDAY #WeWalk4YOU

Every 2.5 days a woman is killed in Canada. Violence Against Women is an everyday occurrence and to see change we need everyday people willing to stand up, speak out and WALK to #EndVAW in EVERYDAY moments.

Women In Crisis (Algoma) Inc. works to see systems changed and to provide care for women and children who are fleeing abuse and violence. Services include: a 24-hour, 7 days/week accessibility to shelter and support services; long-term abuse counselling; telephone/walk-in crisis counselling; awareness and education; systemic and individual advocacy; referral services; and safe housing support. Over the past year these services were used over 6,000 times. The issue is prevalent; the need is real.

Will you help?

“Great Lakes Honda has always been community-oriented. We believe in supporting local organizations such as, Women In Crisis (Algoma) Inc., because we recognize the need for these important services in Sault Ste. Marie. Based on the statistics, far too many women and children have accessed these services in the past year. This event will bring together men, women and children in support of a violence-free community and is one that we’re very proud to support!” said Dealer Principal, Francine Floreani.

Team registration for the walk, which includes up to 6 members, is $100 and individual registration is $25.

The team that raises the most money in pledges will win $50 gift cards to the following places: Sweet Greetings and the Loons Nest, Gliss, Root River, Scott’s Coffee, Sandro’s and The Grand Gardens North. The individual that raises the most money in pledges will receive a free night stay generously donated by the Delta.

The objective of Women In Crisis (Algoma) Inc. is to create a community that stands in support of a violence free life for all women and children. All pledges from this event will go towards furthering the work of ending violence against women and children.

After the walk, there will be an awards ceremony, door prizes, activities and food for the entire family. Both men and women are encouraged to participate in the event. Men are asked to literally “walk a mile in her shoes” and therefore must wear red high heels, which will be provided. Women can wear any footwear of choice and this year thanks to the generous donation from If The Shoe Fits all women will be given a pair of red shoe laces to wear in their sneakers for the Walk!

You do not want to miss this moment, this day to stand as a community and in one voice say:

  • We promise
  • In every moment
  • Of everyday
  • We will commit
  • To walk 4 you

See you on May 25!
