Wichita physician Dr. George Tiller was shot dead as he walked into church today, U.S. media are reporting.
As one of the few doctors in the United States who performed late-term abortions, Tiller became a lightning rod for controversy over the issue.
Anti-abortion protesters frequently targeted his clinic, home and church for demonstrations.
Tiller recovered from a shooting by an anti-abortion activist in 1993.
He was shot to death around 10 a.m. (Central time) at the church he regularly attended, Reformation Lutheran Church, located on Wichita's East Side.
