Brian Thomas from Algoma Steel's emergency services department was one of the first to cast ballots at 6 a.m as local steelworkers started voting today on a tentative agreement.

Members of United Steelworkers of America Local 2724, representing more than 500 supervisors and technical staff, will continue voting at the Days Inn until 7:30 p.m.

SooToday.com will provide live coverage of the counting of ballots starting at that hour.

USWA Local 2251, representing about 2,200 hourly rated production, maintenance and clerical workers, is holding its ratification vote tomorrow, 5:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m., at the Steelworkers Hall.

The tentative pact with Local 2724 is essentially the same as the one reached with Local 2251, with a seven percent wage hike over three years and a $10,000 cash advance against future profit sharing.

There are differences, however, in Local 2724's pension benefits and in other terms of the contract.
