************************* A student from École Georges-Vanier is a finalist at the Canada-Wide Science Fair in Vancouver

Myriam Cyr, a Grade 8 student from École Georges-Vanier in Elliot Lake, is in Vancouver this week to take part in the 2005 Canada-Wide Science Fair.

At the Regional Science Fair this spring, Myriam made an excellent showing and won the Ontario Power Generation Prize for the best project in the renewable energy or environment category.

Entitled "À la rescousse de nos lacs" [rescuing our lakes], Myriam's project concerns the effect of cottages on the ecosystem, particularly on the health of the lakes.

The Canada-Wide Science Fair brings Canada’s best young scientists together and gives them the opportunity to measure their scientific and technological achievements against those of their peers while enjoying a positive scientific and social experience.

The event also exposes students in the geographical area of the Canada-Wide Science Fair to the role models offered by their peers – the best young scientific and technological minds in the country.

Only two percent of the 25,000 participants in 100 regional science fairs are chosen to take part in the Canada-Wide Science Fair.

Myriam is joining 500 young scientists from all over Canada in Vancouver, British Columbia from May 15 to 19, 2005, for a week of competition and fun and educational experiences.

School Board Chairman, Marcel Montpellier, says that he is very proud of the Grade 8 student. "The School Board would like to congratulate Myriam Cyr. This student's achievements are a source of pride for us and we wish her all the best in Vancouver!"
