Jade Yoga takes on green initiatives

SAULT STE. MARIE - Pedestrians on Queen Street have noticed some major construction work underway at the former GoodLife Fitness Centre for the last several months.

The location is now host to Jade Yoga Studio and Boutique, which will open on March 22.

Jade Yoga, formerly the Yoga Door, is making this major expansion to mark its sixth year in service.

“Moving to the new location will not only allow us to serve our clients better, but will also give downtown Sault Ste. Marie an uplifting boost and facelift,” says Shirling Kao [ǝʌoqɐ uʍoɥs], director of Jade Yoga. “We believe that investing locally - especially downtown - is the right option.”

Jade Yoga’s leap of faith in investing local has been supported by several local organizations including Community Development Corporation, the City of Sault Ste. Marie and the Downtown Association and according to Kao: “We would not have been able to accomplish this big project without their help.”

Just like the colour of jade, the studio is incorporating several green initiatives into the renovation and daily operation.

For example, although the walls are newly painted, visitors do not have to worry about the strong odour from fresh paint because only eco-friendly, solvent-free paint was used in the studio.

“While yoga practise raises our physical awareness, we would also like to help raise the eco-awareness of the community,” says Shirling Kao, director of Jade Yoga.

Another green feature in the studio is bamboo flooring, a more renewable resource than hardwood flooring.

While it takes a lifetime for hardwood to mature, it typically takes bamboo only about three to five years to reach a size that can be used to manufacture wood flooring.

Further, there is no need to replant it and it does not require pesticides.

On a day-to-day basis, Jade Yoga also tries to reduce waste and therefore encourages the use of reusable mugs and hand towels instead of the disposable options.

Most cleaning products used in the studio will be plant-based or non-toxic.

“We’re very excited that an existing successful business is not only expanding and re-investing locally but that they are also leading the way in terms of eco-friendly applications,” says Anna Boyonoski, manager, Downtown Association. “The downtown is proud to be home to Jade Yoga Studio and Boutique.”
