The Harper government is getting pummeled over its plan to create a "Northern Ontario oasis" for international journalists attending the G8 and G20 summits in the Muskokas and Toronto later this month.
Industry Minister Tony Clement is using the oasis comparison to describe the controversial design of a $1.9 million media centre to be built at the Canadian National Exhibition site. The complex will include a pretend indoor lake, complete with a dock, trees and loon recordings.
Taxpayers and opposition parties are slamming the federal government for what what many see as needless extravagance.
One protest group wants to name the make-believe lake "Harper's folly."
