************************** Orazietti announces $70,500 for Habitat for Humanity

McGuinty government supporting affordable housing for families

SAULT STE. MARIE - Habitat for Humanity in Sault Ste. Marie will receive $70,500 to help the organization enhance its governance and fundraising abilities David Orazietti, MPP announced today.

“We are extremely fortunate to have Habitat for Humanity active in Sault Ste. Marie,” said Orazietti. “Our government is continuing to support this organization because it is dedicated to breaking the poverty cycle and improving the quality of life for people in our community.”

Habitat for Humanity Sault Ste. Marie was incorporated in 2002 and completed its first home construction project in October 2004.

The organization is currently working on its fourth building project.

Habitat for Humanity Sault Ste. Marie has over 100 volunteers and is governed by a board of 12 members. 

This funding will help the organization hire a full-time staff member to manage operations and enhance fundraising abilities at Habitat’s Restore. 

The provincial government previously provided $128,000 to complete a business plan and support the opening of the Restore building for Habitat for Humanity, which is located on White Oak Drive in Sault Ste. Marie.

The Restore collects and resells quality new and used building materials and the funds generated from the organization are used to help provide affordable housing for low-income families.

In addition the provincial government has provided $4.9 million to repair and improve social housing units in Sault Ste. Marie. 

This funding was made available as a result of a $1.2 billion joint investment under the Canada-Ontario affordable housing project agreement.

The provincial government has also provided $1.3 million for the construction of a new 11 unit social housing building, $1.2 million for other social housing projects, including substantial upgrades at Cara Community, and $313,632 in funding for an emergency rent bank program.

Other McGuinty government initiatives through the Ontario Trillium Foundation total over $3.8 million dollars and include organizations such as:

- $15,000 Sault Ste. Marie Soup Kitchen

- $30,000 KidsHope

- $90,800 Sault Ste. Marie Sports Council Inc.

- $40,000 Christy’s Light Foundation

- $80,000 Sault International Youth Association

- $70,000 Sault Ste. Marie Family YMCA

- $150,000 Vincent Place Inc.

- $15,000 Sault Ste. Marie Community Theatre Centre
