Sault Ste. Marie YMCA participates in Active Aging Week, September 24 - 28, 2012

SAULT STE. MARIE - September 20, 2012, what does “being active” mean to you? 

For older adults, staying active can mean reading the newspaper, tweeting a friend, walking to the grocery store or joining a group of volunteers picking up litter.

There is a way for everyone to choose activities that are appealing to their personal interests.

The great side benefit is that staying active through the years makes life enjoyable.

Across the nation, people ages 50 years and older will experience the theme, “Be active your way” during special events offered during Active Aging Week, the annual health promotion event of the International Council on Active Aging (ICAA) that  will be held September 20-26, 2010.

The Sault Ste. Marie YMCA will join the national campaign by hosting:

September 24

  • 9:30 - 11:30 a.m. Seminar - Staying Independent - Safe Communities
  • 1 - 2 p.m. - Information Session - Elder Abuse - Anishinabek Police Service
  • 2 - 3 p.m. - Information Session - Healthy Hearing - Hearing First

September 25

  • 9:30 - 11:30 a.m. - Seminar - Healthy Eating and Healthy Aging - Algoma Public Health
  • 2 - 3 p.m. - Information Session - Cardiac Rehab - Group Health Centre

September 26

  • 9 - 10:30 a.m. - Seminar - Travel Concerns for Seniors - Canada and US Border Services and CAA
  • 10:30 - 12 p.m. - Seminar - Travel Concerns for Seniors - Canada and US Border Services and CAA

September 27

  • 9 - 10:30 a.m. - Seminar - You and Your Medications and Bone Density Testing - Medicine Shop
  • 10:30 - 12 p.m. - Seminar - You and Your Medications and Bone Density Testing - Medicine Shop

September 28

  • 10:30 - 11 a.m. - Sit Fit

As the World Health Organization states, “active aging” means optimizing opportunities for health, participation and security in order to enhance quality of life as people age.

“The images of aging are changing,” observes Colin Milner, CEO of ICAA, “and today it is known that staying physically and mentally active leads to better overall health, improves mood and brain health, and encourages older adults to contribute to society, their communities and their families. That’s why the special events of Active Aging Week open the doors to new, fun and educational activities.”
